Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question that you don't see below? Feel free to shoot me an email and ask!

That depends! There are varying factors to determine how quickly a mural is going to be completed such as:

  • Whether it's Indoors or outdoors
  • The size of the mural
  • Weather conditions
  • Whether the space around the wall is open to the public (can it be closed or do I work around people)
  • And many other factors

After consultation with my client and having the final approved sketch, I’ll be able to provide a proper timeline of the completion of the mural.

Indoor murals can be done year-round! However, living in a southern, humid state, I strongly suggest

outdoor murals to be completed either in the spring (Mar-May) or Fall (late Sept/Oct-Nov). Although spring and fall can have some hot days, there is less humidity, which can cause the paint to peal (especially on brick). Plus, it’s healthier for the artist as well!

I do! I have some satellite locations throughout North Carolina that I do a 30 mile radius around, including: Dunn, Apex, Midland, Ocean Isle, and Laurel Springs.

If your town, business or residence, is out of this radius, then there will be a gas mileage charge (may vary on gas prices).

That depends!! Again, there are varying factors on the cost of a mural whether it’s indoor or outdoor. The first consultation is free; we discuss what you are looking for and bounce ideas around. After that, there is a $150 sketch fee, which includes one sketch and 2 alterations to the original design. The sketch will be discussed through email, zoom, or in person. If a new sketch is required, then there will be an additional $150 charge. Once a final sketch is decided upon then, the client and I will need to discuss cost of the work, which again vary on how detailed the mural is, what size the mural is, or do I need to rent a lift or get scaffolding….etc Each project has their own variables, which effects the cost of the mural.

As an artist as well as an art educator, I advise against this. There are copyright laws that I’m not willing to break or steal another artist’s work. I’m happy to create something similar, but I do not believe in copying another artist’s work.

There is a 50% deposit required before work can begin; this money is needed to collect supplies and to cover the artist’s reserved time.

Indoor walls may require a simple wipe down, which I’m happy to do. Outdoor walls, typically, require a power washing. If the wall is bare brick (never been painted), then the wall will need to be primed. I can suggest a painter to prime the wall or the client can hire someone they prefer.

That depends! On most of my larger murals, I’ll have my interns help me complete a mural. Otherwise, the work is completed by me, Elyse Johnson.

SIZE! A micro-mural can be as small as 4inches tall (like a little bird above your door frame) or as tall a 6 feet on your wall. Typically, anything larger than 6 feet is a mural (note: this is my business’ definition).

There are many grants that towns or businesses can apply for to have an artist paint a mural. The grants will most likely want the town or business to match the amount of money (not always though).

Self-pay is when the town, business, or individual has saved and budgeted the amount they would like to pay the artist. With that being said, I’m a big advocate for rural towns and businesses, and I am willing to help people apply for grants or to paint a mural within their budget. Let’s have the conversation!!!

It’s important that an indoor or outdoor mural is sealed with a clear top coat; I can seal a mural (which adds cost) or the client can seal the mural after I’m done. The seal is going to help with UV lighting and some minor scratches. If the mural was to be damaged, then I’m happy to come out to fix the mural for an hourly fee.

Indoor murals should last a long time since it's away from weather climates and if it’s out of direct sunlight. Outdoor murals (if sealed) should last between 10-15 years before fading or peeling,

which is what most paint companies guarantee on their labels. Again, repairs can be arranged with me

for an hourly rate fee, or if I’m not available, in my contract it states I reserve the right to choose a

professional artist to fix what is needed to be repaired.
